Economic Development

As a free service for local businesses, the town web site includes an online Business Directory. This was designed as a tool for residents, and visitors. Its purpose is to help you quickly find local businesses and learn what products and services they offer.

History of Economic Growth

growth barchart Since March 2018, several new businesses have moved in, two have had grand re-openings after major renovations, and the old China Mill was purchased and is to be converted to scores of upscale apartments. The following entries show the steady economic growth that is helping to bring economic prosperity to Allenstown.

 Help for businesses

  • Oct. 2023: Hillsbrook Village Senior Living: A Grand Opening was held for this brand new, four-story facility, offering 119 units suited for independent living, assisted living, and memory care living. Scores of residents had already moved in.
  • July 2023: Grand Opening of 25 Canal: This event marked the completion of the conversion of the historic China Mill into 150 luxury apartments. Rental applications quickly followed for one-, two-, and three-bedroom units.
  • June 2023: Andrew S. Thomas Landscaping A landscaping business located in the blue building behind Complete Autobody at 1 Allenstown Rd. Services include lawn care, tree trimming, irrigation repairs, shrub and flower bed pruning, remodeling, mulching, and cleanup, and exterior home repairs (gutters, pressure washing, painting).
  • Sept. 2022: Fiber 'n Forge is a craft store, situated next to the Subway shop. It offers handcrafted gifts handmade by the three family members.
    Due to a death in the family in November, this shop had to close down.
  • June 2022: Wolf Storage took over the former Allenstown Self-Storage facility on the north end of Route 28. They offer storage units for rent from 5x10 ft up to 10x30 ft, all at reasonable prices. The larger units are popular with contractors.
  • May 2022: Tender Years Childcare on Chester Turnpike has expanded its operation by removing unwanted trailers and installing a new paved parking lot to the left of the facility.
  • Dec. 2021: Allenstown Aggregate on Granite St. began construction of a six-unit multi-tenant commercial building for uses such as a warehouse, contractor shop, retail hardware sales, repair shop, or service business.
  • Oct. 2021: Allenstown Self-Storage on Route 28 began construction of an additional row of self-storage units and an office.
  • Jul. 2021: Everbrook Senior Living opened its new Sales Office for Hillsbrook Village, the assisted living facility under construction at Route 28 and Chester Turnpike. The sales office is located in Unit 4 behind the Elliot Family Health Center at 50 Pinewood Rd. (Route 28).
  • Apr. 2021: Suncook River Family Camp (formerly Twin Oaks Campground) at 80 Pinewood Rd. (Rte. 28) was recently purchased and is being extensively renovated. A great deal of trash and abandoned travel trailers were removed. Renovations are to include the camp store, bathhouse, inground swimming pool, and camp sites. A music stage and corn hole game area are also planned.
  • Feb. 2021: SpareBox Storage bought out 603 Storage which had opened in July 2019. Improvements include an electronic security gate, e-mail billing, payment by check or online, and military discounts.
  • Dec. 2020: Nouria Energy acquired four MEGA-X stores, one of which is in Allenstown. Nouria bills itself as "one of New England's largest and most trusted family-owned and operated convenience stores and fuel retailers."
  • End of Nov. 2020: Optimus Senior Living started clearing land in preparation for building construction.
    Brady Sullivan started renovating the China Mill by removing old windows, doors, and interior remnants.
  • Nov. 2020: Allenstown Aggregate received final approval of their site plan for a six-unit commercial building.
  • Sept. 2020: Brady Sullivan Properties received conditional approval from the Planning Board in early September for converting the China Mill on Canal St. to offer 150 upscale apartments and various amenities. In late September, they received approval from the Selectmen of their application for an RSA 79-E tax exemption.
  • Sept. 2020: Allenstown Aggregate received conditional approval from the Planning Board for a six-unit commercial building at the front end of the quarry.
  • Aug. 2020: Suncook River Convenience Store on Route 28 repaved their entire parking lot.
  • Aug. 2020: Optimus Senior Living received conditional approval from the Planning Board for a 126-unit assisted living facility to be built at the corner of Route 28 and Chester Turnpike.
  • July 2020: Allenstown Aggregate received approval for a five acre subdivision at the front end of their quarry. They are also seeking approval to build a six-unit commercial building.
  • May 2020: Hooksett Rent-a-Tool opened for business at Sully's Plaza next to Dunkin Donuts. They rent and sell tools and equipment for small and large projects as well as parts for your equipment.
  • Apr. 2020: Allenstown Self-Storage at 286 Pinewood Rd. (Rte. 28) received approval to build additional storage sheds. Construction was expected in the near future.
  • Mar. 2020: Voters approved additional capital reserve funding to help the EDC with its many projects and initiatives.
  • Jan. 2020: Grossman Suncook received approval for a tool rental business at 43 Allenstown Rd. next to Dunkin Donuts. The new business, Hooksett Rent-A-Tool, was expected to open soon.
  • Nov. 2019: After Morgan Storage completed extensive renovations of the old Key-Loc warehouses, three new businesses moved in by November. The new businesses are Vault Motor Storage, Morgan Records Management, and Granite State Shuttle Service, whose fleet of small trucks makes deliveries to local businesses all day long.
  • Sept. 2019:, Grossman/603 Storage on Chester Turnpike put up the "Now Open" sign and began renting self-storage units.
  • Oct. 2019: Flame Mobile Pizza at 223 River Road received their permit to operate in mid-October. They were open for roadside sales occasionally over the winter months, then every weekend starting in Spring 2020 once the Wuhan Virus restrictions eased up.
  • August 2019: The Family Dollar store undertook a major renovation with a new facade, redesigned product shelving inside, many more products than previously, and a completely repaved amd restriped parking lot outside.
  • August 2019: After purchasing Big Jim's property in December 2018, demolishing the old sheds, renovating the main building, and stocking the yard with hardscape materials, Hudson Quarry opened for business in August 2019.
  • May 2019: A prospective buyer met with town officials about converting the China Mill, which was up for sale, into upscale apartments. The mill was purchased by Brady Sullivan Properties.
  • May 2019:, Grossman/603 Storage received approval for a self-storage facility on Chester Tpke.
  • March 2019: Voters approved initial capital reserve funding for the EDC, which was invested in the new town welcome signs and public concerts.
  • February 2019: A businessman decided to purchase the Suncook River Convenience Store that he had been leasing for 15 or more years. The store was completely renovated inside and outside and looked so much better. A Grand Re-Opening was held on July 12.
  • March 2018: Morgan Storage purchased the long vacant Key-Loc warehouses and planned to renovate the property and lease it to commercial businesses.
  • March 2018: Voters approved a new Business Tax Exemption promoted by the Economic Development Committee (EDC). It passed with 70% of voters in favor.

The Neighborhood

Allenstown lies in Merrimack County in southern New Hampshire midway between Manchester and Concord along the Route 3 corridor on the east side of the Merrimack River.

Town Government Structure

Local government consists of several governing bodies (AKA kingdoms) that perform separate functions and fund their operations through distinct taxation. The Town Government (Board of Selectmen), School District, and Sewer Commission administer their own functions, working in cooperation with each other but independent of each other.

 Board of Selectmen: Typically meets every two or three weeks as needed, Mondays, 6:00 p.m., Town Hall

 Budget Committee: Meets on selected dates, at 6:00 p.m., Allenstown Community Center.

 Planning Board: Typically meets on the first and third Weds. at 6:30 p.m., Allenstown Town Hall.

 Economic Development Committee: Typically meets on the second and fourth Weds. at 6:30 p.m., Allenstown Town Hall.

 Zoning Board: Meets as needed on Weds. at 6:30 p.m., Allenstown Town Hall.

 School Board: usually meets monthly at AES.
