New Hampshire state law requires each town to provide assistance to the poor if no relative can do so. RSA 165:1, section I states,

I. Whenever a person in any town is poor and unable to support himself, he shall be relieved and maintained by the overseers of public welfare of such town, whether or not he has residence there. For the purposes of this chapter the term "residence'' shall have the same definition as in RSA 21:6-a.

In keeping with this statute, the town can provide temporary, emergency assistance with rent, utilities, fuel, food, medical bills, or funeral expenses. Call 485-4276 to make an appointment, or visit Town Hall.
